You Are Here 2000

Site specific works completed for the Radio Halo Project at Jodrell Bank Science Centre and Arboretum, Cheshire, (2000).

From his studio high on Biddulph Moor, Connor has viewed the distant dish of Jodrell Bank for many years. This exhibition provided the perfect opportunity to explore this extraordinary feature in his personal landscape.

He gently infiltrated the arboretum, it’s sites and information displays, with what might be described as site-specific poetry. He encouraged the viewer to recognise the miracle of where they stood, before they considered looking skywards. He reiterated the simple affirmation ‘you are here’ but then elaborated and celebrated each location.

Connor’s work was no fanciful gaze into the cosmos, but was literally a fully grounded dialogue with the place, it’s visitors, and his fellow artists.

This season’s growth

measured in the rings

will show nothing of us,

just one more orbit

around the heartwood.
